Spring Riding Prep: Essential Checklist Before Hitting the Trails on Your SxS or ATV

Spring Riding Prep: Essential Checklist Before Hitting the Trails on Your SxS or ATV

Spring is finally here, and the trails are calling! Whether you ride a Side-by-Side (SxS/UTV) for hauling gear and tackling tough terrain or an ATV for nimble single-rider adventures, that first ride after winter storage can be exhilarating—or a headache if something's been neglected.Don't let old fuel, flat tires, or a dead battery ruin your day. Here's a practical pre-spring riding checklist to get your SxS or ATV trail-ready safely and reliably. Most of these steps take just an afternoon in the garage.1. Give It a Thorough CleaningStart with a deep clean to spot hidden issues. Wash off winter grime, mud, salt, or rodent nests. Pay attention to the undercarriage, wheels, and engine bay. A clean machine makes leaks, rust, or damage obvious right away.2. Check and Change FluidsWinter storage often means stale or contaminated fluids:
  • Engine oil — Check level and condition; change it (and the filter) if it sat all winter or looks dirty.
  • Coolant (if liquid-cooled) — Top off and inspect for contamination.
  • Brake fluid — Ensure proper level and look for moisture or discoloration.
  • Differential/gear oil (especially on SxS) — Check and change if needed.
  • Fuel — Drain old gas if it sat; add fresh fuel and a stabilizer. Consider replacing the fuel filter.
3. Battery InspectionCold weather and inactivity kill batteries fast.
  • Test voltage (should be ~12.6V+ when fully charged).
  • Clean terminals and connections.
  • Charge or replace if weak. For SxS models with accessories, test the whole electrical system.
4. Tires and WheelsSpring trails can be muddy or rocky—tires matter.
  • Check pressure (refer to your manual for specs).
  • Inspect for cracks, dry rot, punctures, or uneven wear.
  • Look at wheel bearings for play or grinding noises.
5. Brakes and ControlsSafety first:
  • Test brake pads/rotors for wear.
  • Check brake fluid and lines for leaks.
  • Inspect throttle, clutch (if applicable), and brake levers/cables for smooth operation and no binding.
6. Belts, Chains, and Drive System
  • Drive belt (common on many SxS/UTVs) — Look for cracks, glazing, or fraying; replace if worn.
  • Chain (on chain-driven ATVs) — Clean, lube, and adjust tension.
  • Check CV boots/joints for tears (critical on SxS to prevent dirt ingress).
7. Air Filter and IntakeClean or replace the air filter—winter dust or critters love clogging them. A dirty filter robs power and risks engine damage on those first dusty rides.8. Suspension, Steering, and Chassis
  • Grease all zerks/fittings (A-arms, steering, etc.).
  • Check for loose bolts, worn bushings, or play in steering/suspension.
  • Inspect shocks for leaks.
9. Lights, Electrical, and Safety Gear (Especially SxS)
  • Test headlights, taillights, signals, and horn.
  • For SxS: Verify seatbelts, roll cage nets/doors, and fire extinguisher (if equipped).
10. Final Test Fire and ShakedownOnce everything checks out:
  • Start the engine and listen for odd noises.
  • Let it warm up, then take a short test ride in a safe area.
  • Monitor for leaks, vibrations, or warning lights.
Bonus tip: Pack essentials for the trail—tools, first-aid kit, recovery strap, spare parts (belts, plugs), water, and your phone/comm gear.
Follow this checklist, and your SxS or ATV will thank you with smooth, trouble-free miles all season. Ride safe, have fun, and enjoy the spring thaw!
